What Is an Eye Emergency?

An eye emergency encompasses any sudden vision problem or eye condition that poses a risk to your eye health or could lead to a loss of vision. Common examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Eye injuries
  • Sudden onset of vision loss
  • Pain in the eye
  • Flashes of light
  • New floaters
  • Chemical exposure
  • Foreign objects in the eye

These conditions require prompt attention to prevent further harm or permanent damage.

What to Do in an Eye Emergency

  • Stay Calm: This helps you to think clearly and take the necessary steps
  • Protect the Eye: If you've experienced an injury, try to protect the eye by covering it without applying pressure or rubbing it
  • Avoid Self-Treatment: Unless you're flushing out a harmful substance, avoid self-treatment, which can worsen the situation
  • Contact us Immediately: Call us as soon as possible. We prioritise eye emergencies and will guide you on the steps to take, including how to safely get to our office or if you should head directly to the emergency room

What Not to Do in an Emergency

  • Do Not Rub or Apply Pressure: This can exacerbate the injury or condition
  • Avoid Over-the-Counter Eye Drops: OTC eye drops may not be suitable for your condition unless advised by a professional
  • Do Not Remove Embedded Objects: Attempting to remove anything stuck in your eye could cause more damage
  • Don't Wait it Out: Delaying professional care can result in worsening conditions or long-term damage
